KDDP

Upon the completion of the Maguga Dam on the Komati River Basin and the eventual impoundment of water, the Komati Downstream Development Project (KDDP) commenced in July 1999 when smallholder farmers downstream of the dam had their land developed into irrigated farms for commercial agriculture. The implementation of the project is coordinated and managed by the Swaziland Water and Agricultural Development Enterprise (SWADE). The Project aims to effectively utilise the country’s portion of 83 Million cubic metres out of the 332 Million cubic metres in Maguga dam whilst improving the standard of living for the communities in the North Eastern part of the country.

The main focus of the KDDP is to assist Farmer Companies in the Project Development Area (PDA) to establish and operate irrigated farms which cover 6,000ha. To date the project cost is estimated to be over E400 Million.

A total of 5,206ha has been developed. 4,616ha is planted with sugarcane against a target of 4500ha. 590ha is under other crops production. A total of 2,360 homesteads have home gardens established within their compounds with 205ha of land planted with vegetables and field crops. 27 greenhouse tunnels, each with a production capacity of 20 tonnes of vegetable have been constructed. Also three nurseries have been constructed and have a potential of producing 2 million seedlings per year. There are currently 74 livestock projects that are undertaken at individual and group level in the PDA; These include; dairy, poultry, piggery, rabbits, and fisheries.
